Biography

Sylvia McEwan - Artists - Pryor Fine Art

Sylvia McEwan’s paintings explore the human figure through expressive color, texture, and mark making. While rooted in observation, the work moves fluidly between representation and abstraction, allowing gesture and paint to shape the final image.

Originally trained in sculpture, McEwan developed a strong sensitivity to form through life drawing and three-dimensional work—an influence that continues to inform her paintings. Working intuitively and without preparatory sketches, she builds each painting gradually. As she describes it, “I build up the painting one brush stroke at a time, each brush stroke leading to the next, always searching for the perfect balance of color and form.”

Since 1996, McEwan has presented sixteen solo exhibitions across Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Her work is held in private collections throughout Australia, Europe, and the United States. In 2003, McEwan was selected as a finalist for the Sir John Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Sylvia McEwan is exclusively represented in the United States by Pryor Fine Art.
