Michelle Y. Williams draws inspiration from a blend of selective influences and spontaneous moments of discovery. She is captivated by imperfections, flaws, and textures—rust, asymmetry, peeling paint, the rawness of concrete—elements that evoke the principles of wabi-sabi. She finds inspiration in the work of artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Cy Twombly, Eva Hesse, Hans Josephsohn, and Louise Nevelson.
While these influences shape her aesthetic, Williams approaches the canvas with an open mind, preferring to start without preconceived notions of the final outcome. This organic process of creation allows for greater freedom and gratification. Throughout her work, she strives to find a delicate balance between contrasts—light versus dark, expressionism versus minimalism—ultimately trusting her instinct to guide her toward completion when the piece feels whole.
