Kathy Moss (American b. 1955) lives and works in Beacon, NY. Carefully attuned to the natural world, Moss leaves no material unused in her studio. She prepares her own gesso and medium from a unique recipe she acquired during her studies at The New York Studio School where she was honored as a Merit Scholar for Painting. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across the United States and is included in notable public collections such as the U.S. Department of State, Saks Fifth Avenue, General Electric, The Equitable Collection, and the Carlyle Hotel in New York.
Moss is a formal painter, drawing from a deep engagement with materials, scale, surface, and composition. Through a rigorous process of delicate paint applications layered over chalk-and-oil grounds, her paintings bridge the conceptual and representational, revealing a hidden narrative that goes far beyond the minimal subject matter and expert use of negative space. Drawn to botanicals for their emotive and symbolic potential, Moss often employs images of flowers, seed pods, skeletons of pinecones and thistles as stand-ins for figures. The mysteriousness and suggestiveness of the marks we take at first blush to be the subject of a painting, are in fact beards for addressing different aspects of the human condition, dramatizing the forces of relationships: push, pull, need, love, power, isolation.
“In my practice art is a wordless thing, deeper than words can convey. I am drawn to painting because I believe it is the deepest thing I can do. I just want to make something beautiful, something evocative, something not overtly narrative. My goal is to make art that is transcendent, poetic, mysterious, that draws the viewer in and invites them to have their own experience.” - Kathy Moss
