I create abstract art because it is the most original, honest way I can work. If I evoke a feeling, memory or emotion from my viewer, I feel I have succeeded. I feel my responsibility as an artist is to create work that causes people to stop and explore the subtleties of the image. In my approach, I attempt to initiate but not answer the questions.
For me, painting in an abstract manner is definitely “flying by the seat of your pants” and I love the challenge and exhilaration. I have been creating art, painting, drawing for most of my life. It is who I am—my raison d’etre.
My process now includes plaster, acrylic paints, pastels, charcoal, graphite, and sometimes just acrylic paint & perhaps ink. Although I have worked in many different media over the years, these are the ones I’m drawn to today. Having started, as most painters do, in a rather realistic fashion, I discovered abstract painting through the Abstract Expressionists of the 40’s, 50’s and 60s. They were and remain an inspiration to me. Oftentimes I find that a thought, dream or experience will be the catalyst for a series of paintings but whatever I am working on, I find that my main motivation is an intense, innate desire to create. Painting takes me to a deep, secret place within myself that I am unable to access any other way. It is an imaginary, childlike dream world where thoughts, ideas and expressions are allowed to roam free, unfettered by judgment or scorn.
