Philip is a graduate of the Beaux Arts in Paris. The narrative found in Ross’ art is a direct reflection of channeled life experience. ‘The ink drawings depict images that appear fantastical or even impossible, and yet, our dreams allow perception in a similar fashion so we may well ask ‘What is reality’? These works offer an invitation to journey through mythical landscapes and escape into surrealism. They speak to the individual in a manner unique to each and there is often a curiosity from the viewer to know how these pieces came to exist. It is perhaps not so much how, as opposed to where, these drawings are created. They appear in a liminal space, somewhere between the conscious and the unconscious. It is there that a mind sets free slides into the churning embrace of creativity and the most fascinating renderings are destined to surface. To this end the path in surrealist creations is not one of rote or that which is easily mapped. It is akin in its essence to the more fluid nature of Daoism and perhaps metaphorically to that of birds in flight.
