Born in Driebergen, the Netherlands, in 1949, Lex Heilijgers is a painter and sculptor influenced by artists such as Georges Braque and Richard Diebenkorn. He combines abstract and figurative elements, distilling objects into basic lines and forms to create dynamic, recognizable works on canvas and in stone.
Initially a surrealistic and naturalistic painter, Heilijgers shifted toward abstraction, exploring simplified forms in townscapes, landscapes, and still lifes inspired by Mediterranean architecture and sunlit villages. His travels and sketches provide a foundation for his paintings, emphasizing rhythm and balance.
A lifelong interest in sculpture led Heilijgers to create abstract pieces inspired by African tribal art and nomadic silhouettes. His works are designed to be appreciated from all angles, with anatomical proportions central to their forms.
Meticulous and introspective, Heilijgers refines each piece until it fully meets his vision, believing that a finished work speaks for itself.
