Bibliography

2016 Carlos Rojas, MACA, Monte Azul Center for the Arts www.macastudios.org
The omnipresent California sunshine is often at once muted and intensified by the San Francisco fog, and its
depiction can lead to formulaic conventions that may even slant towards the trite. Yet, this light permeates
daily interaction with the environment and to ignore it would be to disregard the reality of life in California.
San Francisco artist, Kathleen Finney, successfully defies the cataloging of her work as landscape painting, yet
it is difficult to ignore the atmospheric quality of her pieces. Her works are inhabited by glimpses of time and
space, where bold edges and shapes may fade away into a multidimensional atmosphere, hinting at the passage
of time and the imperfection of memory. Overall, the compositions tend to be imbued with moments of angst
and melancholy amid the sunny palate, beautifully integrated and graceful, rarely abrupt, and it is this tension
found within Finney’s complex imagery, which is often contradictory, that draws the viewer in for an experience
with a mystery, or mysteries, that are never revealed.

Kathleen Finney's process is a building up and tearing down of form and line that
is secured by deep muted blues, intense black & translucent white; punctuated by
rich jewel tones.
While the work conjures a type of mysterious landscape, they can also be considered
aerial observations; incorporating geometric complexities with spontaneous markmaking.
With the use of diverse media, the artist conveys a sense of complex history and
illusive memory, without giving way to any specific narrative. This intuitive approach
to the surface, while unsettled & mysterious, enables a continuation of an unending
visual journey and intellectual examination.
Kathleen is a third generation San Franciscan, who lives and works in the city. She studied
at: California College of the Arts, San Francisco Art Institute, and UC Berkeley Extension.
Her work is exhibited nationally and internationally.
