I have spent a lifetime examining the figure, first as a dancer and yoga instructor, a portrait painter, and then as a manipulator of the human form through abstraction. I feel this has led me to push further, using this experience to see the human form and movement outside the physical limits. Through the use of a pigment, ink, charcoal, papers, and plaster, I am try trying to push beyond the lines. I never know what will happen as I address the canvas. Through many layers, I allow the paint to dance as I replay choreography and postures in my mind, until it is released in the movement of the universe.
These are interesting times. A slower and more reflective pace has replaced the fast track of the last 10 years. I have felt a need to become more grounded, connecting more deeply with family and close friends. My new work compares the light sources in master paintings created by the intense study of sunlight and reflection with light in contemporary work manipulated, so effectively, by halogen and digital enhancements. Visually, I hope my paintings take traditional subject matter and transform it to contemporary vision. In doing so, I seek to create a bridge to follow the light into the future.
